Why COFDM is the game changer for drone UAV video transmission

The reason why COFDM (coded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) has become the game changer for drone UAV video transmission lies in its use of multiple carriers + channel coding + anti-multipath design. This has overcome the four major weaknesses of traditional wireless video transmission (analog, Wi-Fi, 4G) in complex environments, high-speed movement, long distances, and non-line-of-sight conditions, making drones/ UAVs transform from 'being limited to flying in a straight line and seeing only what's in front' to a reliable operation platform capable of 'passing through buildings, climbing mountains, operating at high speeds, and covering long distances'.

The following are the five transformative advantages of the COFDM video transmission:

  1. Non-line-of-sight (NLOS) + Strong Diffraction/Transmission

    • Traditional wireless video transmission must be line-of-sight and direct, it will fail at any obstacle. On the other hand, COFDM relies on the UHF frequency band (300–860 MHz), which has strong diffraction and multi-carrier diversity. It can bypass buildings, mountains, and forests, and still transmit high-definition audio video signals stably even in areas with obstructions.

    • Application: Inspection between urban buildings, mountain search and rescue, forest firefighting. With the help of UAV/ drones, videos can be transmitted back to Command Center conveniently and quickly.

  2. Super strong resistance to multipath and interference

Multipath reflection from tall buildings, mountains, or water surfaces is the number one enemy of wireless video transmission. Traditional single-carrier systems are prone to screen flickering and disconnection. But COFDM makes video transmission stable as a rock in complex environments.

  3. Ultra-long range + high-speed movement compatibility

LOS range: 1-20W power + high-gain antenna, capable of reaching up to 10-50km, far exceeding Wi-Fi (a few hundred meters) and ordinary digital video transmission (a few kilometers).

    • At high speed: Resistant to Doppler effect, supports movement at 180–600 km/h, while traditional wireless video transmission will be interrupted at high speed.

  4. High definition + low latency

Supports 1080P/4K, with a bandwidth of ≥ 4 Mbps, and in combination with H.265 compression, the picture quality far exceeds that of analog video transmission.

    • Delay of 80-150 milliseconds, meeting the real-time control requirements for aerial photography, inspection, and emergency command, make it essential for real-time operations.

  5. High spectral efficiency + Flexible deployment

The sub-carriers are orthogonal and can overlap in frequency, resulting in a bandwidth utilization several times higher than that of a single carrier.

    • Omnidirectional antenna, no complex alignment required. It can transmit during both moving-to-moving and moving-to-stationary operations, making it suitable for rapid deployment by drones/UAVs.
